This book is amazing. Seriously, it has everything I look for in a book. Mystery, love, a few sociopaths, and a can't put down writing style. I'm a long time Barbara Freethy reader, and this story does not disappoint. You will love the two main characters and all of the side characters are so intriguing that you'll enjoy seeing how everything is intertwined. I couldn't put this book down, it was so interesting and I had to find out what happens. This is the first part of a sequel but, the questions get answered from this book, and the characters I wanted to learn more about are in the second book. And I can't wait to see where that one takes me!

If you read Barbara Freethy's earlier books, which were very good! But wow, she has far and above topped those! She has woven a tremendous story that will capture your attention from page one until the last page! This is such a good story! It will keep you guessing all the way to the end. I can't wait to read her next book PLAYED!!
I love Barbara Freethy -- everything she writes. I really enjoyed her story of Nick and Kayla and the premise of the book itself. I loved the way they were thrown together, their relationship how it progressed. While some parts of the books dragged out a bit, the story kept you hooked overall and I can't wait to read the next one!
Fascinating story line with tons of complications. The idea of a bride waiting for her groom who never shows up on their wedding night captures the imagination. Loved the characters, especially the heroine.s grandmother. Can't wait to read the next book months series.
A top notch mystery story inter-woven with a sweet romance. Of course, there is the usual over thinking and denial of feelings, and hot sex, but the real story is the mystery of old friends, family secrets, betrayal, violence, and hidden treasure played out in San Francisco, one of my favorite cities. Spoiler alert be prepared that full closure does not come at the end of the book. The villain escapes custody to continue his evil game and we do not learn the identity of the mastermind.
I never liked mystery stories, but, since I have been an avid reader of Freethy, I gave this series a shot.

I described this as EXCITING because there are so many stories of so many people and it only rooted from a pocket watch and I liked how Freethy injected the ROMANCE of Nick and Kayla in their search of truth.

Freethy has created a story that is very well thought out and that a reader will not only be excited to finish the whole book but the whole series as well. She created characters that are still uncovered until a reader finishes the whole book and should proceed to the next book PLAYED. It gets exciting because of the perfect criminal she created and emotional because of the lovers and their unbelievable adventures together.

I was so tempted to go to the end side of the book just to see how things went, but Im glad i didn't cheat, not a part was boring that i did not notice i was finished and want to read on to the next book.

Good Job for Freethy.
This one kept me in suspense and wondering what would happen next. A newlywed husband disappears on their wedding night and the twists and turns and surprises begin and kept me turning the pages and in suspense until the end. Excellent writing by one of my favorite authors. Book 1 of the Deception series and not disappointing at all!
The first chapter made me want more, but the rest of the book fell far short of the beginning.
I have two big issues with the story...
While the villain is consistently described as "evil," mostly he comes across as a snarky
frat boy. He presents little danger and when he does cause a problem for the hero and heroine,
they easily overcome it. Mostly, I wanted to smack him.

And I don't understand why "romantic" now translates to "sex" in romantic mysteries. Without giving
anything away, the hero initially thinks the heroine is part of a scam. So he grabs her, threatens her,
calls the police on her, stalks her and within hours of that, she is all over him, having hot monkey
sex. What???
She says she is "not that kind of girl" but she certainly acts like it.
There is a sequel but I am pretty sure it will not be on my "to be read" list.
