A Popular History of Ireland from the Earliest Period to the Emancipation of the Catholics — Complete eBook Thomas D'Arcy McGee
Lots and lots of detail; almost too much. However if you are looking for a very detailed history this one is for you. It was written a long time ago and the English is dated and a little difficult. I'm not finished with it but am really enjoying it. We Americans think there's too much violence here, but in the day, Ireland's history is filled with much sadness, but much joy in the better times.Product details

A Popular History of Ireland from the Earliest Period to the Emancipation of the Catholics — Complete eBook Thomas D'Arcy McGee Reviews
TDMcGee's telling of Ancient Erin and later is clear, very informative, an easy read; this brilliant mind knew the Mss very well, a feat in itself;
Interesting
I got this book, because of reading the Fidelma Mysteries. It confirmed what historical parts are included in the Fidelman Mysteries.
Comprehensive but often unclear for a novice reader of Irish history or one unfamiliar with the British government and culture
Dry, but useful reference material.
Wasn't what I thought it would be on Ireland. I wanted more of what the people did in old days with lots more things.(how kids were treated, things the churches did)
This book contains a good overview of Irish history from the introduction of Christianity to the Catholic Emancipation of 1832. The style is a bit archaic but still readable, and some of historical perspectives have gone out of fashion (the nerdy kids say, "the historiographical perspective is rather outmoded"). But the author presents in all their details the political, religious, economic, social, and technical developments of centuries of Irish history.
The coverage of the pre-Christian era is unfortunately very cursory, not to mention badly outdated - but then this is where archeology and anthropology have had the biggest changes in the past 150 years. It's also reeeeeeeaaally long, I brought this with me around Ireland for two weeks, reading a couple of chapters every day, and didn't finish it until long after I'd got back. Plus, the price is right!
