Maybe some people think that the way the black characters are depicted is slightly racist or slightly dated. They might be slightly right. Aside from that though, I really enjoyed this book. I got the audiobook version because I drive a lot for my work. This book had me so engrossed that I missed my exit a few times. Honestly, it stressed me out a little too much. Really liked this story and its unique in that the setting is during an alternate reality 1970's. Unlike other stories I've read by Niven and Pournell, this is set during contemporary times. Specifically, during the time setting of when this novel was originally published. Niven's other novels I've read take place in the distant future. This was an interesting view into the science fiction of that era.
This is one of my favorite books. I have read it several times in print and now am glad to enjoy it in kindle format. In my opinion, it is one of the very best "end of civilization" reads ever written. If you haven't ever thought about what will happen if/when major disaster hits, this will give you plenty of food for thought.
The one thing I can say about this book that most will find appealing is the tempo. This book, although rather large, moves along at a fast pace. It's not bogged down with drivel and filler. The characters are developed quite well and the author does a good job of putting queues deep in the book so you remember who they are. One thing I really enjoyed was that it took place where I live and the attention to detail for the local areas brought a whole other dimension to the story.

There really isn't one person to cheer for, although it starts out with a couple. Their roles seem to ebb and flow. Towards the end, it did slow down a little and I feel the ending sort of skipped over some items. It seems the author may have had more to put out there but perhaps the publisher didn't want an 800 page novel. I get the sense that was the case.

Still, quite enjoyable.
I first read this book back in 1988 or so, found it at the pool in our motel. No one came to claim it and I needed a book, so... It is very fascinating, at the time a very up to date way to look at what we would do if we knew the end was near. I will never forget how to preserve books - Ziploc bags, cotton balls with camphor and something else (okay, I forgot) on them, zip the bag and throw the book in a sealable cistern. Save as many books as possible. I have re-read it many times and finally decided to get it on my . Reading it now it is a bit dated - calculators instead of tablets, etc, but it's still a great story. Really makes you think "what would I do if this were to happen?" I highly recommend it and have for years
This must have been my 5th or 6th time reading this particular book. The version has an updated forward from Larry Niven. Some geopolitical things and technology related things have happened since the book was published, but in my opinion make no difference to the story of what would potentially happen if a comet struck the Earth. I still get chills with every reading and wonder if and how I and my family would survive.
Been a long time since I read this. I just bought an extra copy so I would always have one around as it is one of my favorite "What if" books of all time. Your living your life, a meteor falls from the sky and life as humans have known it is over. This is the story of how a few humans get together and try to jump start civilization again and do a pretty good job of it. It's frightening and eye opening. Also a good look at what one might need to do if some great catastrophe happened and some humans survived, such as EMP strike or Yellowstone the largest Caldera volcano went up. It is quite the book and one of my number one picks to have on a desert island.
A comet is basically a group of asteroids with a gaseous tail. The problem is that the asteroids can be as big as mountains or even bigger. This is a great story about one crashing onto Earth. The story is initially set in southern California with an emphasis on the Pasadena-Glendale-Burbank-Tujunga area and the San Fernando Valley. It then shifts to the foothills at the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley after the comet strikes. It takes place in the 1970s when pocket calculators were the latest high-tech invention along with digital watches.
When the comet hits, the Los Angeles Basin is destroyed by a tidal wave and much of the rest of the world is also destroyed. Survivors in the foothill areas of Los Angeles try to escape and it is basically every man for himself. A few make it to Silver Valley, a small valley at the edge of the giant San Joaquin Valley, and regroup at a ranch owned by a California senator.
All of a sudden society reverts to a much earlier stage were daily survival is at a premium. The most important occupations for men are now farmer and warrior, with most of them doing both. While some women help with defense, their main occupations are housewife and mother. No one initially knows if they can survive the coming winter. Meanwhile a gang of black criminals from Los Angeles and a renegade army unit operating in the valley hook up to terrorize the area. The local farmers and the survivors at the ranch team up to oppose them. The future of what's left in California hangs in the balance.
