These books are pure gold for me. I had long been a fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley and have read almost all of the books she ever wrote. Her death in 1999 was a great literary loss. I won't spoil the story by giving details. Suffice it to say that these books will take you into a different world. The characters are fully developed, and in the case of Lew Alton and Regis Hastur, build on prior works. It's not necessary to read those prior works to enjoy this series, in fact, it may help not to from the readers point of view of discovering the story from Margaret Alton's perspective (the main character for the first two books).Tags : Exile's Song (Darkover) [Marion Zimmer Bradley] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This book was a truly great read. I had trouble putting it down. More of the history of the Alton's and the Hastur's, and more of the future as well. This book has that magical MZB quality that I have grown to truly love.
This was the first of Marion Zimmer Bradleys Darkover books that I read, and after reading it I went looking for them all. Wonderful story, well written, makes you laugh and cry. I have read multiple times over the last few years and will read it again...
I have always been a fan of Darkover series and this book did not fail to meet my expectations. I had a hard time putting the book down and going to bed. I lost a lot of sleep over this book. I am not good at writing reviews but I highly recommend this book.
Was as described and came in a timely fashion
GOOD CHARACTERS, GOOD NARRATIONS
This is the best of the series for sharing the difficulties of a telepathic society. There are many instances and parts in the book that contribute to a wider picture of why telepathic powers are harder to imagine. Often the reader is given glimpses in situations. One of the Darkover masterpieces.
The Darkover books were written specifically so that you could pick them up and read them in any order. That said, the books are based on the history of a specific fictional planet, so there actually is a time sequence, and characters may show up as main characters in one book and as a peripheral character in another book.
This is a good beginning of the story of Marguerida Alton, who was born on Darkover, but taken away when she was quite young. In the back story, she grew up on another planet, and lead a fairly normal life, until the university she attends sent her to Darkover to collect folk songs.
That's where the book starts.
She finds Darkover both familiar and strange. That's not surprising. What is surprising is that everyone she meets there treats her as nobility. Even more surprising, she turns out to be an heiress, and she's not so sure she actually likes that, because her inheritance comes with responsibilities and restrictions.
This a great book and the start of a great series that features very real people in stressful situations. It's one of my favorites, but so is anything Marion wrote about Darkover.
